Basic Formatting: Underlining, Aligning and Bold Text
The important part of word processing is
making the text readable. This is done by some basic formatting i.e.
aligning the text here and creating paragraphs there.
To Underline Text: Highlight the Text you would like to be underlined and click the U button at the top of the Screen with the Mouse. The image below shows this:
The Text should now be underlined.
This process can be repeated in the same way to make the text BOLD or Italic by clicking either the B or the I next to the Underline Button.
To Create a New Paragraph simple hit the return/enter key and this will automatically skip a line so that a new paragraph is started. To indent the new paragraph press the TAB
Key. This is the one with the two arrows pointing in opposite directions on the left of the keyboard usually above Caps Lock.
To align Text: Highlight the Text you wish to align and then select the alignment you would like: Left, Right,
Centre or Justified. The image below shows and example of justified text:

Advanced Formatting: Superscripting and Subscripting Text and Adding Symbols
Having mastered the basics of formatting it is now time to look at some more
advanced options of Word such as Superscripting and Subscripting.
Superscripting and Subscripting are used to add effects such as raising the nd on 2nd. Subscripting is when the letters or number appear below the text
e.g. 2nd
To add this effect in Word simply highlight the text and click Format >> Font and then tick the Box Superscript or Subscript.
The image below shows this:
You will also notice a whole variety
of other effects you can add which you can play around with to see what they do. Alternatively Highlight the text and press CTRL + Shift + +(superscript) or
CTRL + = (subscript).
To add a Symbol to the text such as greek letters click Insert >> Symbol and then select the symbol you wish to use. This is useful as it can make writing up
scientific papers in word easy and make them alot more professional.
