Anti Virus – A program that monitors incoming traffic for viruses and can be used to remove them

Blu–ray – A standard for high definition discs with a capacity of 50GB

FM – Frequency Modulation – a method of generating sounds from simple wave forms

Firewire – A very fast data link between a PC and a digital camcorder

Firewall – A system that prevents unauthorised access to your computer over networks and the internet

MB – Megabyte a measurement of storage capacity.

Optical Drive – A term used to describe drives that use DVD or CD discs

OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer. Component sold to manufacturers for incorporation to a system usually at a cheaper price.

Portal – A website that offers a variety of services such as news and email

Parallel Port – A single socket on a PC used to connect a printer or scanner

PCI – A high performance expansion slot on desktop PC’s designed for simple installation of PCI components

Processor – Known as the “brain” of the computer that executes the instructions given.

Router – A device used to connect more than one computer together and to the internet.
