Someone sent me an email from my own address and it was not me

This is a technique known as email spoofing. Its easy to create an email that appears to come from a different email than it does. In the from field in outlook express you can change this to say anything you like.

Spam programs will automatically copy the recipients email into the from field to cover the true origin. Viruses also use this technique by randomly selecting someone's email from the infected PC's address book to make it appear as if the virus came from that PC.

You can trace the real sender by using the help of www.usus.org/elements/tracing. Bare in mind that spammers can spoof these details as well and there are even programs that can send email completely anonymously.
