Guide to Creating a Boot Disk
What is a Boot Disk
A boot Disk allows you to boot the computer from the floppy drive instead of using the hard drive. This is beneficial if there is a problem within windows that needs fixing
or to get older MS-DOS programs working.
To ensure that these disk will work please format the floppy disk first to erase all data.
Windows 98 Boot Disk
This will work if you are running Windows 98
To create a Windows 98 boot diskette, click Start
> Settings > Control Panel > double-click the Add Remove programs icon
> click the Startup Disk and create disk.
Windows NT Boot Disk
To Create an NT boot disk you need access to the installation CD of Windows NT.
Format the floppy disk and then copy the files boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr to the floppy disk.
Note: For SCSI devices you will need to copy these drivers as well
Windows 2000 Boot Disk
Note: You need 4 1.44mb disks for the windows 2000 boot disk and access to the Windows 2000 installation CD
Click Start > Run > browse to the CD-ROM drive. Open the "BOOTDISK" folder and double-click makeboot.exe and click ok to launch the program to create the diskette
Windows XP Boot Disk
When formatting a floppy diskette, users have the option of creating a MS-DOS startup disk, follow the below steps to do this.
1. With the Disk in the drive
2. Open My Computer, right click the A: drive and click Format.
3. In the Format window, check Create an MS-DOS startup disk and then Click Start
